FMP RESEARCH

Any research you do will be counted, it doesn't matter if it's research for Proposal or main project, the important thing is you get marked for doing research to help make your project great.

Only do research that’s useful. You don't need to watch a tutorial if you know how to do something already. You don't need a survey to find out your audience - you decide that yourself. A survey might be useful to get feedback midway through production, or to find out what your audience likes (but you are going to be the main person deciding what goes in your project, so use this as guidance and help).

Research is to support development of your product.

Research & pre-production (see next page) go hand in hand.

Research is all about reading, watching, analysing and most importantly, doing. It is not a google search and looking at the top result. This takes time and you should be making decisions on what is and is not useful (write this down). The whole point of research is to help you make informed decisions about your project. It also allows you to demonstrate your critical thinking skills and your decision making skills.

Make notes and present your research in a way that is clear and decisively shows your research skills and analysis.

Say why the research being completed is important, useful and relevant to your project.

Suggested things to research:

  • existing products (critical analysis): review how others do it

  • how-to do things (practical research),

  • finding locations (see next page too),

  • which props, costumes (mise-en-scene),

  • colour schemes,

  • composition,

  • sourcing actors, equipment [etc etc]

  • books,

  • websites,

  • articles

Suggested tasks (speak to teacher for guidance)

TASK 1

General research plan (research schedule/production schedule/Gantt chart)

eg camera lenses, lights, locations, characters, mise-en-scene

TASK 2

Specific research plan: list of tutorials/equipment/etc from above list relevant to you

eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88ekW-M7o48 - a tutorial on lighting

five locations: my classroom, the photograhy studio, by the benches near M block (etc)

TASK 3

Priority list from above task WITH rough timings (eg 1 lesson lighting)

TASK 4

Review and evaluate the research plan

TASK 5

Do the research! Reflect as you go

TASK 6

Make it clear who your target audience is, and why.

And what they like.

And what you can put into your media product/film as a result...

Link research to audience

eg looking at children's TV show Hey Duggee the colours are bright, the narrative uplifting, so in my film I will incorporate x y z

Detailed high level of research will give you higher grades.
